Grace’s Famous Hot Chocolate
Grace’s famous hot chocolate makes its appearance in When Love Overcomes on Jedidiah and Maggie’s first night with his chosen family in Iowa. Grace believes there is nothing wrong with a warm, sweet treat even in the summertime, and soon everyone is gathered around the table with mugs topped with a choice of miniature marshmallows, whipped cream, cocoa powder, and sugared cinnamon. Jedidiah, of course, piles on every one of them. Over mugs of Grace’s hot chocolate, the faces seen only through video chat become family, and Jedidiah and Maggie are drawn into their circle as though they were always part of it.
Ingredients
- 8 oz. high quality chocolate chips
(example: Ghirardelli) milk, semi-sweet, or dark, whichever you like best. - 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- If needed, add sugar or the sweetener of your choice to taste.
Toppings:
- whipped cream, marshmallows, cinnamon, cocoa powder, crushed peppermint, cinnamon sticks and candy canes can be used as stir sticks.
Instructions
1. In a medium saucepan, combine milk, cream, salt, and chocolate chips. Cook over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate chips are completely melted and liquid begins to steam. Remove pan from heat and stir in vanilla.
2. Use a whisk or immersion blender to combine the mixture and ensure the chocolate is well homogenized into the milk.
3. Ladle into cups and add toppings.
